As Senior Director of the Office of Gift Planning, Rich Naponelli oversees Notre Dame's team of field fundraisers for gift planning, estate, trust, and annuity administration, and the negotiation and acceptance of all planned gifts, including traditional planned giving vehicles and gifts of privately held businesses, real estate, restricted securities and other non-cash assets. Additionally, Rich oversees the Badin Guild, a Notre Dame giving society, comprised of alumni, parents, and friends who, through thoughtful estate planning, deferred giving, and other forms of planned giving, ensure that resources will be available to support Notre Dame far into the future. Prior to joining the Office of Gift Planning, Rich worked as an attorney for nearly eight years, most recently in the Chicago office of Perkins Coie LLP, where his practice focused primarily on tax and estate planning. Prior to working at Perkins Coie LLP, Rich was an associate attorney at Winston & Strawn LLP and Madden, Jiganti, Moore & Sinars LLP. Rich graduated from Notre Dame in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He earned a master of science in accountancy from Notre Dame in 2004, before earning a law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 2007. Rich and his wife Jennifer have two children.

As Director of Gift Planning for the West region of the United States, Patrick Brennan works with Notre Dame alumni, parents, and friends with an interest in deferred and structured contributions to Notre Dame, including estate and trust gifts, gifts of real estate, and gifts of privately held business interests. Patrick graduated from the Notre Dame Law School in 1998 and immediately joined the Office of Gift Planning.

As the Director of Gift Planning Administration, John Butkovich is responsible for managing all administration matters related to estates when the University is a beneficiary and the life insurance program. In addition, John provides technical and other support for Gift Planning Directors and participates in the stewardship of our Badin Guild members. John also manages the University's Charitable Gift Annuity program. John practiced law in Cincinnati for 25 years, specializing in workers' compensation law with the firm of Butkovich, Schimpf, Schimpf & Ginocchio, and served as the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County, before returning to his alma mater to join the Office of Gift Planning. John graduated from Notre Dame in 1963, earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He earned his law degree from Chase College of Law in Cincinnati in 1968. John and his wife Mary Ann, a 1964 graduate of Saint Mary's College, have three children, Joe '88, Annie '91, and Andy, and five grandchildren; the oldest is a 2017 Notre Dame graduate.

As a Director of Gift Planning for the East and Southeast regions of the United States, Chris DeTrempe works with Notre Dame alumni, parents, and friends with an interest in deferred and structured contributions to Notre Dame, including estate and trust gifts, gifts of real estate, and gifts of privately held business interests. Chris joined the Office of Gift Planning in January 2009 after having served as the Associate Director of Notre Dame's Executive MBA program for both Chicago and South Bend. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2006, Chris was Director of Operations for McDonald's Corporation in Dallas, Texas, where he had also served as a Director of Finance. Chris received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Notre Dame in 1986 and began his career with a national public accounting firm, Coopers & Lybrand. Following graduation, he earned his CPA, and later earned a master's degree in business administration from Texas Christian University in 2003. Chris and his wife, Corinne, a graduate of Saint Mary's College, have five children.

As a Director of Gift Planning Administration, Ken Hendricks works with Notre Dame alumni, parents, and friends with an interest in deferred and structured contributions to Notre Dame, including estate and trust gifts, gifts of real estate, and gifts of privately held business interests. Prior to his return to Notre Dame in 1995 as an assistant director of planned giving, Ken practiced with the tax department of the South Bend office of Coopers & Lybrand, a leading national public accounting firm. From 1988 through June 1995 at Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers), Ken focused on tax planning and compliance, primarily for individuals. From 1984 to 1987, he worked in the tax department of the Chicago office of Grant Thornton, another national public accounting firm. Ken is a "Double Domer" - he earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Notre Dame in 1981, and received his law degree from Notre Dame Law School in 1984. Ken and his wife, Lori, have four children. The oldest is a 2010 graduate of Notre Dame, the second-oldest is a 2013 graduate, and the youngest is a member of the Class of 2019.

As a Director of Gift Planning for the Northeast region of the United States, Rob Ortiz works with Notre Dame alumni, parents, and friends with an interest in deferred and structured contributions to Notre Dame, including estate and trust gifts, gifts of real estate, and gifts of privately held business interests. Rob joined the Office of Gift Planning in October 2013 after having served as the Academic Advancement Director for the Notre Dame Law School. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2011, Rob was a Partner of the law firm Florio, Perrucci, Steinhardt and Fader in New Jersey. In 2008, the New Jersey Law Journal selected Rob to its list of "40 under 40." According to the Law Journal's publisher, the 40 lawyers on the list are people under the age of 40 who are "worth watching not only for what they have achieved so far in their careers but more so for the potential they show to be among the leaders of the New Jersey bar in the next decade." Rob graduated from Notre Dame in 1994, earning a bachelor's degree in government and international relations with an emphasis in politics, philosophy and economics. He earned his law degree from Villanova University School of Law in 1997. Rob and his wife Leah, also a 1994 graduate of Notre Dame, have four children.

As a Director of Gift Planning, TJ works with Notre Dame alumni, parents and friends interested in deferred and structured contributions to Notre Dame, including estate and trust gifts, gifts of real estate, and gifts of privately held business interests. TJ is a "Double Domer", having earned his Bachelor of Arts from Notre Dame in the Program of Liberal Studies in 2003 and his Juris Doctorate from Notre Dame Law School in 2008. Following law school and prior to his return to Notre Dame in 2017, TJ worked as an attorney in private practice in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Most recently, TJ served as a shareholder, member of the Board of Directors, and Chairperson of the Probate and Estate Planning Practice Group at Wickens, Herzer, Panza, Cook & Batista, Co. in Avon, Ohio, where TJ provided estate, tax, and business succession planning counsel to high net-worth individuals and families. TJ and his wife, Quinn, also a graduate of Notre Dame, have three children.

As a Director of Gift Planning for the Midwest region of the United States, Michelle Shakour works with Notre Dame alumni, parents and friends with an interest in deferred and structured contributions to Notre Dame, including estate and trust gifts, gifts of real estate, and gifts of privately held business interests. Michelle has served as a Director of the Office of Gift Planning since 1993. She holds four degrees: a bachelor of arts from Saint Mary's College, a master of arts from Middlebury College in Vermont, a master of science from Indiana University, and a law degree from Notre Dame. Michelle and her husband, Gabriel, have five children (Maria '06, Christina '09, '16 JD, Caroline '11, and Michael '15).

University of Notre Dame Gift Planning Advancement Committee

The Notre Dame Gift Planning Advancement Committee (GPAC) is a group of approximately 30 volunteer leaders consisting of Notre Dame alumni, parents and friends. The members are from various areas of the country and have diverse backgrounds both professionally and personally, but they have common characteristics—they love Notre Dame, they are committed to advancing our mission, and they are exceptional leaders.

Mission Statement

The Notre Dame Gift Planning Advancement Committee seeks to increase awareness of the University's critical need for long-term planning through the thoughtful creation of structured or deferred gifts like wills, trusts, real estate, and others.

Goals & Objectives
  • Help shape and endorse strategic directions of the Notre Dame Development Office.
  • Know and tell the Notre Dame story, including the past reliance and future need of structured and planned gifts.
  • Provide a network of alliances and enabling resources.
  • Assist in planning networking and educational events to actively promote awareness of the need for structured and planned gifts.
  • Provide expertise and mentor the Office of Gift Planning on strategic initiatives.
  • Analyze internal issues and provide external perspective.

Listed below is the current membership of our GPAC.

Jack & Cathy Brennan, co-chairs of the GPAC—Jack is the retired chairman and chief executive officer of The Vanguard Group and is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees at the University. All three of their children graduated from Notre Dame ('06, '08, and '11). Jack and Cathy reside in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

Frank & Dominica Annese—Frank ('61) is the retired chair and chief executive officer of Annese and Associates, Inc. and is a member of the College of Arts and Letters Advisory Council. Dominica is a member of the Nanovic Institute Advisory Council. Frank and Dominica reside in Cooperstown, New York, and Naples, Florida.

Dick & Corneila Corbett—Dick ('60) is the president of the Concorde Companies and the Corbett Family Office. Dick and Corneila reside in Tampa, Florida.

Ed & Nancy Coppola—Ed ('76) is the president of The Macerich Company and is a member of the Mendoza College of Business Advisory Council. Ed and Nancy reside in Dallas, Texas.

Tom & Shari Crotty—Tom ('80) is the managing partner of Battery Ventures. Tom is also a member of the Mendoza College of Business Advisory Council and a founding member of the Wall Street Leadership Committee at Notre Dame. Tom and Shari reside in Southborough, Massachusetts.

Matt & Terri DeSalvo—Matt ('80) is a member of the Mendoza College of Business Advisory Council and a founding member of the Wall Street Leadership Committee at Notre Dame. Matt and Terri reside in Riverside, Connecticut.

Mary Lou Durkin—Mary Lou is a member of the Institute for Church Life Advisory Council. Her late husband, George ('56), and daughter ('81) are both Notre Dame graduates. Mary Lou resides in North Olmsted, Ohio, and Naples, Florida.

Jay & Mary (Hesburgh) Flaherty—Jay ('79) is the chief executive officer of HCP, Inc. and is a member of the Board of Trustees at the University. Mary ('79) is a member of the Undergraduate Experience Advisory Council at Notre Dame. All three of their children graduated from Notre Dame ('06/'07, '08, and '14). Jay and Mary reside in Los Angeles, California.

Mike & Sheila Geddes—Mike ('61) is the chair and president of Geddes and Company and is a member of the Board of Trustees at the University. Mike served as the honorary chair of the Stephen Theodore Badin Guild for over ten years. Mike and Sheila are members of the Institute for Church Life Advisory Council and have had a son graduate from Notre Dame ('93). Mike and Sheila reside in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Bill & Karen Goodyear—Bill ('70) is the chairman and chief executive officer of Navigant Consulting and is a member of the Board of Trustees at the University. One of their children graduated from Notre Dame ('01). Bill and Karen reside in Chicago, Illinois.

Bill & Joan Hank—Bill ('54) is the chairman and chief executive officer of the Farnham Investment Group and is a member of the Mendoza College of Business Advisory Council. All of their children graduated from Notre Dame ('79, '81, '82, '85, and '94). Bill and Joan reside in Wheaton, Illinois.

Dick Huether—Dick ('55) is the retired corporate marketing executive of General Electric Company. Dick resides in Schenectady, New York.

John Madden—John ('59, '62 MA) is the chair of the F.N.B.C. of LaGrange, Inc. John is a member of the College of Arts and Letters Advisory Council and the Ireland Advisory Council. Three of his children graduated from Notre Dame ('85, '86, and '91/'95). John resides in LaGrange, Illinois.

John & Marilyn McDonough—John ('58) is the chairman of McDonough Medical Products Corporation. John and Marilyn reside in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Chris & Carmi Murphy—Chris ('68) is the chair, president, and chief executive officer of 1st Source Corp. and chair and chief executive officer of 1st Source Bank. Chris is a member of the College of Arts and Letters Advisory Council, and Carmi is a member of the Snite Museum of Art Advisory Council. Three of their children graduated from Notre Dame ('92, '01, and '06). Chris and Carmi reside in South Bend, Indiana.

Ken & Ann Stinson—Ken ('64) is the chairman of Peter Kiewit Sons', Inc. and is a member of the Board of Trustees at the University. One of their children graduated from Notre Dame ('93). Ken and Ann reside in Omaha, Nebraska.

Tim & Marti Sutherland—Tim is the chairman and chief executive officer of Pace Global Energy Services and is a member of the Board of Trustees at the University. Two of their children graduated from Notre Dame ('02 and '07/'10). Tim and Marti reside in Middleburg, Virginia.

John & Beth Veihmeyer—John ('77) is the United States chair and chief executive officer of KPMG, LLP and is a member of the Mendoza College of Business Advisory Council. One of their children graduated from Notre Dame ('05). John and Beth reside in Potomac, Maryland.
