Leah Landry '17 Scholarship Recipient

Leah Landry '17 Scholarship Recipient

A graduate of the class of 2017, Leah Landry strives to make a difference and enact change in the world, a mission that was inspired by her transformative time studying at Notre Dame. Throughout her life, Leah has pursued this goal. Leah loved school and sought a university that would empower her to fulfill that mission while challenging her academically, and a scholarship funded through a planned gift made by Joan Hoffman DeCrane, led her to choose Notre Dame as the institution that would do just that.

While Leah came into Notre Dame intending to study science, she quickly found her passion in Political Science, with a particular interest in Peace Studies. Leah recognized the importance of work in Peace Studies, as those classes have shown her how to make structural systemic changes and thus directly challenge overarching problems in society. Leah worked for three years on the student-run Peace Conference Committee, serving as its co-chair during her senior year, working to bring peace-related issues from around the world to the forefront of discussion at Notre Dame.

During Leah's time at Notre Dame, she also served as an RA in Farley Hall and also became involved with the South Bend community through the Reading for Life program, a mentoring program for young people in juvenile detention.

After graduation, Leah spent a year of service at Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation, a restorative justice organization on the south side of Chicago through which Leah worked to bring all she learned about community-building and social transformation to life. Longer-term plans include studying either law, social work or public policy so that she can continue making an impact at the system level.

Leah believes that scholarships, such as those offered through the generosity of planned gift benefactors and the one that enabled her to attend Notre Dame, are essential to fostering a student body enriched by diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
